SFCDI October 2019 | Connecting the DOTS

On October 16th (6:00pm PST) , SFCDI  welcomes Nirvik Saha and Sanjeev Tankha.  This month’s meeting will be hosted at the WRNS Studio #501 2nd St #402, San Francisco, CA 94107.

Feature Presentation: Connecting the DOTS

Space allocation is the process of designating spaces towards specific functions along with an appropriate grouping and circulation to generate floor plans for a building or urban layout. It is a primary objective in the practice of architecture and planning. The generation of a floor plan or urban layout has eluded automation due to the combinatoric complexity of the problem. This research proposes a method to generate floor plans based on characteristic patterns of architectural layouts. It applies a reinforcement learning method to guide geometric operations that generate spatial components and ensure the required grouping of spaces along with routes for circulation and access to preferred cardinal directions. The paper provides a comprehensive explanation of the proposed representation of design requirements, algorithms, domains of utilization, an illustration of results and scope for generalization.

Speaker: Nirvik Saha, PhD Student at Georgia Tech

Nirvik Saha is a Ph.D. student in Design Computation at Georgia Tech, where he is developing algorithms to automate design processes in architecture and urban planning. Nirvik is a research assistant at the Digital Building Lab (DBL) under the advisement of Dr. Dennis Shelden, where his involvement is centered around computer graphics, web development and applications of machine learning to develop generative algorithms for building geometry and optimization of layouts at various scales. This work is being developed in collaboration with the Process Lab at Perkins+Will under the guidance of Dr. John Haymaker.
